![]() In your case of something being between the bottom of the rafters, I would think that it would be called blocking. First picture below shows drawing with terminology. A purlin brace goes from the underside of this purlin to a wall or beam below the ceiling joists ( also called rafter ties ). Purlins mounted beneath rafters are used in supporting the rafter at a mid point between the ridge of the roof and the plate on the outside wall of the building. Those mounted above are for attaching roofing directly to them. There is a different use for them depending upon location. "Is it still a purlin if it's between the bottoms of the rafters for sheeting the ceiling?"įrom everything that I have read regarding construction terminology, purlins can be mounted either above or below rafters. ![]() Posted 10:21 (#6227993 - in reply to #6227817) Subject: RE: started building Adam's commodity shed Is the roof sitting on top the back wall? I would assume so.but i could be wrong. so i am a construction newbie also.Do you have any pictures of the back wall where it connects to the roof? I cant tell how you did that. With 20 feet between walls with rafters on them, he needs 2 X 12 for purlins, lots of distance to span for snow load. Garvo's building is a monoslope with 4 rafters, one on top of each stud wall dividing the bays. In these examples metal roofing can be fastened directly to the purlins. With more distance between trusses, purlins are set on edge for more strength as they span a greater distance. In second picture trusses are spaced 8 feet apart and the main rafter portion of the truss would be larger dimension lumber than with closer spaced trusses. In this picture, trusses could be 4 feet apart and 1 x 6 boards could be used for purlins ( or as most carpenters here call them " roofing or sheathing boards" ). Purlins are laid on their "face" side across the main rafter portion of the roof truss. First shows wood frame roof system with gable trusses. Here are a couple of pictures from the web.
